Introduction
For the purpose of this dissertation an archaeological and a historical survey of the Gallen Barony, of County Mayo is being undertaken. The effort will be a wide-ranging documentation of areas of historical and archaeological interest.
Aims and objectives
The primary aim of this survey is the anthology of a feasible account of the historical and archaeological sites of the Gallen Barony with emphasis on significant locations particularly one at the townland of Currane, Ballyvary; sometimes spelled Corrane. The Tower House is listed under Section 12 of the National Monuments Act 1994 page 070-8. It is a protected building and there is a substantial structure still in existence. The building has always been referred to as Currane Castle though it is actually a Tower House. It was built in the fourteenth century by a descendent of the Jordan clan called FitzStephen.
